About Alappuzha
Alappuzha, better known as Alleppey, is the beating heart of Kerala's backwaters: a shimmering maze of canals, brackish lagoons and palm-fringed lakes stretching across more than 900 kilometres. For centuries these waterways were the highways of the spice trade, and today they carry a gentler cargo of slow-moving houseboats and country canoes.
A night aboard a kettuvallam, a traditional rice barge reimagined as a floating cottage, is the quintessential Kerala experience. You drift past emerald paddy fields lying below sea level, villages where life is lived on the water, and sunsets that set the whole of Vembanad Lake aglow.
