Thekkady

Spice hills and a tiger reserve

About Thekkady

Thekkady is the gateway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, 925 square kilometres of evergreen forest wrapped around a glittering man-made lake. A boat cruise across its still waters at dawn is the classic way to spot elephant herds, sambar deer and, with luck, a tiger come to drink.

Surrounding the reserve, the cool town of Kumily is steeped in the scent of cardamom, pepper and clove. Spice plantation walks, bamboo rafting and guided jungle treks with reformed poachers turned protectors make Thekkady one of Kerala's great wildlife escapes.
