Wayanad · Kerala, India
Wayanad
Kerala’s green, untamed highland
About Wayanad
Tucked into the north-eastern corner of Kerala where the state meets Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Wayanad is a tapestry of misty mountains, spice plantations and some of the oldest forest in the Western Ghats. Its name means "the land of paddy fields", and rice still ripples between the wooded hills.
This is wild Kerala, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, roamed by elephants, gaur and the occasional tiger. Neolithic petroglyphs in the Edakkal Caves and a living tribal culture give the landscape a depth of history as rich as its biodiversity.
